Alfred Smith 1d + 6d Envelope

  • Digital Collection

A stamped to order envelope with 1d and 6d embossed stamps prepared for Alfred Smith & Co of Bath who had premises opposite the Roman Baths in Bath, as shown in the vignette on the left hand side of this envelope. The embossed stamps are undated and would have been struck in 1894, probably shortly before the envelope was used. It has been used registered to Belgium on 9 May 1894 (2d registration fee plus 2 x 2½d postage for a letter weighing up to one ounce).  Registration labels were not in use in Great Britain at this time and the red registration label has been added by the Belgian Post Office.  Because this is a registered item, the stamps have been cancelled with a single circle cancellation as used by counter staff in the post office.
