A fully prepaid letter bearing 9 pence Canadian and 24 cents US postage; the 3 cents embossed stamp was to comply with US Post Office requirements. The letter was carried by Wells Fargo steamer from Victoria (Vancouver Island) to San Francisco (9 June 1866) where the US stamp was attached and thence by steamer to Panama, over the isthmus by rail and by a third steamer to New York. The final stage was by Cunard steamer "Cuba" from Boston to Liverpool. The letter was postmarked 16 July 1866 on arrival in London.
