Wells Fargo & Company Passenger Receipt

  • Digital Collection
A receipt for a lady to travel by Wells Fargo & Company stage coach on 13 May 1868 from Sacramento to Helena, Montana, a distance of about 1,000 miles by road across the Rocky Mountains. Gold had been discovered in Helena in 1864. Why a lady should be travelling to a gold mining town we do not know, Perhaps she was joining her husband, but was she aware how very rough and ready were these towns at the height of the gold rush?
