A letter from Minehead, Somerset, dated 24 August 1706 addressed to Paul Orchard Esq , at Aldercombe in ye p’ish [parish] of Kilkhampton, Cornwall.

To be left at ye Post Office at Bytheford [Bideford]

A straight line MINEHEAD handstamp was applied [faint]

No postage was payable as franked by Hugh Payne (status not known).

TAUNTON straight line handstamp. From Taunton the letter travelled to and along the great road to Exeter, then to Bideford via Barnstaple.

By arrangement a common carrier may have carried the letter the 20 miles southwest from Bideford to Kilkhampton.
