INCENDIE DU SPHINX.

This cachet is recorded by Monsieur Tournier as struck in black on a letter bearing the departure postmark of Alexandria of the 12th November, 1923 and the arrival mark of Annonay Ardeche of November 20th, but he is without further information concerning it. 

Hoggarth & Gwynn report that a fire caught in cotton in Hold No. 2, where the mail was also stowed. The crew put the fire out by flooding the hold and the ship continued to Marseilles where some mail was recovered, but only some 10 covers are known.

 

Carl Hardeman Smith has a cover addressed to Theodore Champion 13 Rue Drouot, Paris with 

 

ALEXANDRIA

12 Nov 23    1.30.

 

This was the first cover actually seen and it is evident that the wreck occurred in 1923.
